Description:
PocketPhonics Lite is the FREE, cut-down version of PocketPhonics.
Phonics was endorsed by the US National Reading Panel in 2000 as a key part of teaching children to read. Simply put, phonics is about helping children sound out words when reading by understanding the sounds that letters make.
Aimed at children aged between 3 and 7, PocketPhonics Lite uses animated graphics, sound and touch to:
• teach children six of the most-frequently-used letter sounds;
• how to write these letters;
• how to “blend” these letter sounds together to sound out words;
The full PocketPhonics contains all the individual letter sounds in the alphabet, and over 30 sounds that come from a combination of letters like “sh”. It also teaches how to sound out and spell over 170 words frequently-used in children’s books.
This application was designed and reviewed by teachers who use phonics to teach children to read. It is based around best educational practice. Some of this may be surprising unless you teach young children.
For instance, PocketPhonics primarily focuses on lower-case letters because an important part of how children learn to read is through recognising the shapes of words. If words are written in CAPITALS, the letters all have the same height and the shape of the word becomes hard to distinguish.
